I agree that I might have overstated the case in order to make the point that the internet tends to make us search for entertaining memes rather than digging deeply into a writer's thought. I find I must use great discipline to keep focused on fundamental insights rather than more superficial elements while online. It sounds like your daughter is able to extract great insights using internet-based sources as well. I have been attempting to do the same for the past 30 years, but I wanted to make the point that the online bias is toward superficial diversions rather than the sort of insights that could strike while touring the library shelves. This inattentiveness and superficiality is partly due to the follow-on effects of algorithmic attention management by the major platforms such as Facebook and Google. But it is definitely possible to resist these effects and finding the best ways to do that is one of the major purposes of my writing.
